Is mica really thin, almost plastic-y feeling? I just noticed today (I am pretty slow with these things) that my thermowell has a window and if you open the service door, you can see the flame if the burner for the thermowell is burning. Wouldn't that affect the temperature holding process in the thermowell?
Also, second question.Does anyone really cook with the gas off? I tend to use it as a regular oven and should probably try and I am sure I will. Right now I am just enjoying cooking on this stove.

I'm cooking with the gas off all of the time. The Thermowell is fantastic for baking small batches of bread, buns, biscuits and such. For vegetables, I just "get them going" then turn off the heat and leave them undisturbed until ready to serve. Also, fantastic if you're making fruit sauces...I'll fill a half pot with seeded apples, put on high fire for ten minutes then allow it to cook with the gas off for an hour or more and you've got beautiful applesause.

Of course we "CWTGO"!! That's why we search high and low for the t-well pots.
Go read the oatmeal topic. Only boiling water, steel cut Irish oatmeal and the t-well & pilot light--no gas.
I like to get dinner ready in the AM and let it "CWTGO" all day and it's ready at dinner time. No babysitting your dishes amd/or slaving over the stove!! I do stews, pots of beans, roast and just about anything that I can think of.
If you don't have the cookbook you must get it!! You will be able to utilize all the features of "CWTGO"!!

That's definitely mica. You'll find it in the thermowell window and below the oven door.

Whoaaa, mica in the thermowell ????
I have a 15-B and I don't see any. Maybe there
isn't any in a B ??? Someone please set me straight.I have a square opening about 3x3" on one side of the thermowell and a retangular opening about 5x3"on the other side where the damper attaches (if I remember right). I hope I get this thing back together correctly.

On my stove, when you look in the service door, you see a round thing where the gas goes into the well. To the left of that is a rectangle and that is where the mica window is. I lit the burner and it works.

Good morning Sam...can you answer this question for the rest of US. Is there a mica window in any of the thermo wells that you're aware of? Thanks Pete...Laura and I have a BZ.
